Mussorgsky’s 1867 composition, depicting a Witches’ Sabbath on St John’s Eve, is still usually heard in Rimsky-Korsakov’s adaptation. As soon as I heard Mussorgsky’s original version – much more raw and powerful – I conceived the idea of transcribing it for two pianos, and this version, published now for the first time, was premiered by my duo with Andrew Ball at the South Bank Centre London in 1991.
I wish to acknowledge generous help from Clive Williamson in preparing my first draft, and to thank Charles Rees for patiently typesetting the whole score. Dedicated to the memory of Andrew Ball
