Before completing his musical studies at the Milan Conservatory, Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) served as an organist at the cathedral in his hometown of Lucca. After early attempts at composing theatrical works, he completed the elegiac Crisantemi (Chrysanthemums) in 1890 as a string quartet lamenting the death of his friend Amedeo di Savoia, the former King Amadeo I of Spain. Within a few years the two main themes of Crisantemi reappeared in Manon Lescaut, Puccini’s first operatic success.

The name of the piece refers to the flower in Italian culture that symbolizes heroism, loyalty and mourning. In June 2020, as Spain moved to end its national state of emergency in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Crisantemi was performed at Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu before a capacity audience of 2,292 potted plants. After the concert, the plants were awarded to the city’s healthcare workers in gratitude for their sacrifice.

With this arrangement of Crisantemi, featuring the somber Flügelhorn, brass quintets around the world have a meaningful way to memorialize their communities’ many losses.
